The Roastery

What is a small batch or micro roastery?

We work with coffee importers to source coffee beans in their green (unroasted) form. The beans we select are chosen for their flavours as well as ethically responsible trading practices. Once the beans are with us, we develop a roasting profile to bring out the very best flavours from the beans. We use this profile to roast small batches of coffee for our customers, the small size of each roast allows us to carefully monitor the quality of every bean which leaves our roastery.

Why is freshness important?

Coffee is at its peak within two weeks of roasting, after this time the quality begins to deteriorate.

Why is your coffee different from the coffee I can buy in the supermarket or high street coffee chains?

Pre packaged coffee available in supermarkets in packet or pod form is designed to have a long shelf life, by the time it reaches your kitchen it could well have been sitting in warehouses or on shelves for many months. Most people notice a significant improvement when they make the switch to fresh coffee.

A trend within some of the more well known high street coffee chains is to roast the coffee for too long, resulting in a very dark bitter tasting coffee. The reason behind this strategy is to extend the shelf life of the coffee and mask the deterioration of the coffee behind the bitter notes of the overly dark roasting profile. Here at the Ormskirk Cookhouse Roastery, we appreciate a dark roasting profile from time to time, just not quite that dark! This overly dark roasting strategy is one of the many reasons we would always recommend visiting a local independent coffee shop instead of frequenting the larger commercial chains.

We are happy to discuss wholesale discounts and are able to ship nationwide (with free wholesale delivery available within West Lancashire and Merseyside). Please contact us to discuss a personalised solution to suit your business.

Online Store

How long does delivery take?

Orders placed before 3pm are dispatched by Royal Mail the next business day. Orders placed over the weekend are dispatched on Tuesday.

How fresh is the coffee you dispatch?

We dispatch coffee up to a maximum of 7 days after roasting. We do not dispatch coffee which has been roasted less than 24 hours before dispatch as freshly roasted coffee requires resting to allow it to dispel carbon dioxide and for its flavour to develop.

What are your delivery charges?

For orders of less than £25.00, we charge a £2.00 contribution towards shipping and handling. Orders over £25.00 are dispatched free of charge.

We are currently offering free delivery to those living in West Lancashire, just select the appropriate option at checkout.

Can I request a custom grind size?

Yes! Our standard grind options are whole bean, fine (for espresso machines) and coarse (for filter / cafetier / drip brewing). At Ormskirk Cookhouse we understand that coffee brewing equipment varies a lot and standard grind sizes do not suit everyone. If you would prefer your coffee to be ground finer or coarser than our standard grind sizes, please specify this at check out and we will adjust the grind size to accommodate your requirements.

Do you ship outside of the UK?

We value all of our customers, no matter where in the world they are. Unfortunately, customs regulations and shipping rates do vary from country to country. If you would like an order shipping outside of the UK, please contact us and we will do our best to help you.
